Top-10 Major Sporting Events of 2022

Of the many major events on the 2022 sporting calendar, here are our suggestions of events you should put on your bucket list, to watch online, on TV, or ideally to buy a ticket and travel to joins the fans in the stands to watch it live.

1. FIFA World Cup

After a four-year wait, it's time for the world's most popular sport to put on it's show. The FIFA World Cup is the most viewed event in the world, so there's a good chance you will be watching. This time all the eyes of the world is on the tiny nation of Qatar. While the temperature will be steaming outside, in the stadium large air-conditioniners will keep the fans and players cool. The event, involving 32 national teams, will run from November 21 until December 18, 2022.

2. Winter Olympics & Winter Paralympics

It seems only like last year we had an Olympic Games (it was!). The 2022 Winter Olympic Games are being held in Beijing, China from Feb 4-20, 2022. It is the first time a city has hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. There will still be crowd restrictions due to the pandemic, hopefully good lessons have been learned from Tokyo's experience.

3. Commonwealth Games

The 22nd Commonwealth Games are to be held in Birmingham, England, from 28 July until 8 August, 2022. This major event, held every four years, includes athletes from the 72 countries and territories of the Commonwealth. A women's cricket tournament has been added to the sports program and beach volleyball returns after a successful debut in 2018.

4. European Sports Championships

It will be the second time the European Sports Championships has been held. It's a relatively new multi-sport event held every four years for athletes from European nations. The idea is that instead of each sport holding a European Championships at separate venues and on different schedules, they will be clustered together in a host city, similar to the setup for the Olympic Games, making for an exciting more focused sporting event. It will be held in Munich, Germany, Aug 11–21 2022.

After a year or two of disrupted tennis tournaments due to the coronavirus pandemic, it should be a year of packed tennis action. The annual tournament at Wimbledon is always the highlight of the tennis calendar. The only remaining grand slam event still played on grass, it is a spectacle to watch, and it may be the last time we will see Serena Williams at a Grand Slam tournament.

10. The Open

The major of the majors, the Open Championships is holding the 150th Open at the home of golf, the Old Course at St Andrews. Will we see Tiger Woods' comeback from his horrific car accident last year? Whoever wins will go down in history, winning this most historic event on a very historic occasion.
