Here are the sporting highlights of the world of sport in 2007. Major events for this year include the Rugby World Cup in France, won by South Africa. The Women's Football World Cup was held in China, and the Cricket World Cup was held in the West Indies (March-April).
This year saw the most news worthy moments come from the Major League Baseball. The 755 home runs by Hank Aron, which was regarded as unbreakable and stood that way for over four decades was broken by Barry Bonds on Aug 7th in a game against the Washington Nationals. Though Bonds eventually scored 762 home runs before he retired, most fans regard his achievement as tainted because of his alleged use of performance enhancement drugs.
For a 30-3 final score, a typical guess would be the scores of a NFL game. But on the Aug 22nd, Texas Rangers routed Baltimore Orioles to record the highest runs scored by a single team ever and the highest winning margin ever.
Major League baseball, which was already facing intense criticism for its leniency on players performance enhancing drug use faced yet another major setback when Roger Clemens, a superstar up until that point, was included as a frequent steroid user in the Mitchel report. Roger, the once sure hall-of-famer, suffered a serious damage to his reputation ever since.
In tennis, Rafael Nadal won his 3rd straight French Open title, and Roger Federer won his 5th straight Wimbledon title, both defeating each other in the finals of the respective grand slams.
The 2007 Laureus World Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards went to tennis player Roger Federer and pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva.
