The Copa América is the international championships contested among national teams from South America. Brazil is one of the 10 CONMEBOL nations and is a regular participant in the tournament. Brazil played in the very first tournament in 1916.
Brazil have won the tournament nine times (the third-most successful team behind Argentina and Uruguay with 15 each. Their most successful period was from 1997 to 2007, winning four out of five Copas.
Winning years: 1919, 1922, 1949, 1989, 1997, 1999, 2004, 2007, 2019.
Trivia
- Brazil attended the 1959 tournament in Ecuador with a team from Pernambuco, a state in Brazil.
- Pelé only competed in one South American Championship, in 1959.
