NHL Push & Pull Strength Tests

This is an upper body push and pull strength test, determined using the Strength Meter dynamometer.

test purpose: this test measures upper body pushing and pulling strength

equipment required: Strength Meter Dynamometer.

pre-test: Explain the test procedures to the subject. Perform screening of health risks and obtain informed consent. Prepare forms and record basic information such as age, height, body weight, gender, test conditions. Check and calibrate equipment. See more details of pre-test procedures.

procedure: The device is placed over the shoulders of the player, and make sure the dial is reset to zero before you start. The handles are positioned in front of the body, parallel with the body and positioned at the level of the stomach. The player grasp the handles with the elbows at approximately 90° and the palms facing inward. The athlete stands with the feet placed shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent, and is instructed to either push or pull both handles with maximal effort in the horizontal plane (either away from the body or towards the body). The action should be performed with no jerky movements, and a rest period is allowed between trials.

scoring: The score is read from the dynamometer. The best of three trials is recorded for each test (push and pull).

advantages: this is a simple test to perform

disadvantages: it is only possible to test one person at a time. The equipment is not readily available, and possibly expensive.
