Shuttle run tests involve repetitive running back and forth, either over the same distance, or with changing distances. There are many shuttle type fitness tests, from short duration high intensity tests measuring speed and agility, to high-intensity and medium duration anaerobic shuttle tests, and longer and slower paced tests measuring aerobic fitness (and many in-between). Here is a list of the aerobic type shuttle tests.
About Aerobic Shuttle Tests
Aerobic shuttle run tests require the participant to run back and forth between lines or markers, at increasing pace or as quickly as possible. These tests use a set distance to shuttle between, between 10 and 40 meters. Some of these shuttle tests also have rest periods.
Aerobic Shuttle Tests - continuous
- 1200m Shuttle Test (Bronco Test) — to and from a start line to 20, 40 and 60-m marks, 5 times without a break.
- Beep Test (Multi-Stage Shuttle Run Test) — continuous 20m shuttles of increasing speed, until exhaustion.
- Birtwell 40 meter Shuttle Run — longer version of the 20 m Beep Test
- 10m Beep Test — shorter distance beep test designed for children with cerebral palsy.
- Miller 20m Run — hybrid of a timed run test and the beep test, the score is the total number of 20m shuttles covered in the five minutes.
Aerobic Shuttle Tests - intermittent
- Andersen Test — 15 seconds run / 15 second rest while running a 20m course out and back.
- Yo-Yo Intermittent Tests — 20m shuttles with incremental speeds, and rest periods of 5 or 10 seconds after every 40m.
- 30-15 Intermittent Fitness Test / Interval Shuttle Run Test — 40m shuttles with a 30:15 second work:rest ratio.
- Interval Shuttle Run Test — this test involves 30 seconds of running alternated with 15 seconds of walking over a 20m shuttle area.
- Loughborough Intermittent Shuttle Test — includes jogging, running and sprinting, while moving between two lines 20 meters.
- Henman Shuttle — five x one-minute of 20m shuttle runs, with one minute recovery between each set.
