Endurance Racing (Motorsport)

Endurance racing is a sport that falls into the motorsports category, where drivers in teams of two or four, race for long distances, which tests their endurance, and also the durability of their vehicles.

Endurance races are of two formats, either for a fixed number of laps, or time based, where drivers try to cover as much distance as possible in a fixed time. The most commonly used format is a 1000km race. The other formats are, a 1000 mile race, and time based races for 12 and 24 hours. The team to first finish the fixed number of laps, or the team to cover the most distance, based on the race format, is declared as the winner.

Endurance races are of three types, automobile racing, motorbike racing, and motorboat racing,  based on the vehicle used, of which, automobile racing is the most popular.

The three most popular auto endurance racing events are the 24 hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring, and 24 Hours of Le Mans, which is collectively known as the triple crown of the sport. There are also several annual auto endurance racing series like, FIA World Endurance Championship - an international event, United SportsCar Championship - an United States event, and the European Le Mans Series - an European series.
