We asked people to rate the range of physical and mental factors that contribute to successful performance in sports. Not all of these factors are important for Rogainers - and that is what this survey was about.
Here are the results of how important people think each of these factors are to the success of Rogainers (note, these are just the average opinions of visitors to this site). You can read a more detailed description of the factors. This survey is an extension of a previous (though still active) poll asking you to select the single most important FITNESS component for rogaining.

Analysis of Each Success Factor in Rogaining
1. Body Size and Composition (1.8)
Body size and composition received a low rating of 1.8, indicating it has little impact on success in rogaining. Unlike sports that favor specific body types, rogaining is accessible to individuals of all sizes. The sport relies more on endurance, navigational skills, and mental resilience rather than physical build, allowing participants of diverse physiques to perform well.
2. Aerobic Endurance (4.5)
Aerobic endurance scored a high 4.5, underscoring its importance in rogaining. Participants often traverse long distances over varied terrain, which demands a high level of cardiovascular fitness. Superior aerobic endurance allows rogainers to sustain energy over extended periods, manage fatigue effectively, and maintain focus, all of which are essential for completing the course efficiently.
3. Strength & Power (2.3)
Strength and power received a moderate rating of 2.3, suggesting a secondary but supportive role. While raw strength is not essential, a certain level of muscular endurance—particularly in the legs—can help when traversing hills, uneven ground, and dense vegetation. However, success in rogaining relies much more on stamina and strategy than on physical power.
4. Speed / Quickness (2.8)
Speed and quickness were rated at 2.8, showing that while valuable, they are not top priorities. Rogaining is a sport of endurance and navigation rather than speed alone. However, a certain level of quickness can be advantageous when time is running short, especially if it means reaching a checkpoint before the clock expires. Strategic planning outweighs raw speed in this sport.
5. Flexibility (1.8)
Flexibility received a low rating of 1.8, indicating it is not a significant factor in rogaining. While some flexibility can aid in moving through uneven terrain or over obstacles, it is generally less important than endurance and navigation skills. The sport demands efficient movement and stamina over a broad range of terrains, where flexibility plays a minor role.
6. Agility (2.4)
Agility, with a rating of 2.4, plays a supportive but secondary role in rogaining. Agility helps with quick direction changes and maneuvering through dense forests or around obstacles, but it is less important than endurance or tactical skills. While helpful, agility is not as critical for success as the ability to maintain stamina and make smart navigational choices.
7. Balance & Coordination (2.0)
Balance and coordination, with a score of 2.0, are moderately relevant but not essential in rogaining. Basic coordination helps with stability on rugged trails or uneven terrain, but maintaining balance is largely a matter of careful footing rather than a decisive skill. Rogaining demands more in terms of stamina and mental focus than fine motor coordination.
8. Reaction Time (2.4)
Reaction time scored 2.4, indicating it has minimal importance in rogaining. The sport’s focus is on strategic navigation and endurance rather than fast reflexes. While some reaction time is helpful when encountering sudden terrain changes or obstacles, quick decision-making is more about planning and route selection rather than fast physical reactions.
9. Analytic & Tactical Ability (4.8)
Analytic and tactical ability received the highest rating at 4.8, reflecting its critical importance in rogaining. Competitors need to read maps accurately, interpret the terrain, and plan efficient routes to maximize checkpoint collection within the time limit. Strong analytical skills enable participants to make optimal navigation choices, avoid costly errors, and adapt to changing conditions on the course.
10. Motivation & Self-Confidence (4.3)
Motivation and self-confidence scored a high 4.3, highlighting the mental resilience needed in rogaining. Self-confidence is essential to make navigation choices without second-guessing, while motivation drives participants to continue despite physical and mental fatigue. Mental endurance is critical to completing long events and staying focused on the end goal.
11. Coping with Pressure Situations (3.3)
Coping with pressure received a score of 3.3, reflecting its moderate role in rogaining. The sport can be mentally challenging, especially when time is running out or when unexpected challenges arise. The ability to handle pressure allows rogainers to stay calm, make sound decisions, and keep their focus, even when tired or behind schedule.
12. Skill and Technique (4.0)
Skill and technique, with a rating of 4.0, are foundational in rogaining, where navigation and map-reading are essential. The technical skill to read topographic maps, use a compass, and follow chosen routes accurately makes a significant difference in performance. These technical skills form the foundation of successful navigation and checkpoint collection.
Conclusion: Key Factors for Success in Rogaining
In rogaining, the most critical success factors include Analytic & Tactical Ability, Aerobic Endurance, Skill and Technique, Motivation & Self-Confidence, and Coping with Pressure Situations. These factors emphasize the sport’s focus on long-term endurance, navigation, and mental resilience over physical strength or speed.
Less essential factors, such as Body Size and Composition, Flexibility, and Reaction Time, play minimal roles, as rogaining does not require a specific body type or rapid physical reactions. Instead, the sport demands a blend of physical endurance, strategic planning, and technical navigation skills, enabling participants to excel in this unique, challenging, and mentally engaging sport.
