The Copa América Centenario was held in 2016, celebrating 100 years of CONMEBOL and Copa América. It was the 45th edition of the tournament, though some sources do not countr it as an official COpa America edition.
The tournament was hosted in the United States, the first time the tournament was held outside of South America. USA hosted the 2024 event too.
The tournament commemorated the 100th anniversary of the first Copa América, which was first held in 1916. It marked a century of one of the oldest international continental football competitions.
The tournament was organized jointly by CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation) and CONCACAF (North, Central American, and Caribbean Association Football). The tournament featured 16 teams instead of the usual 12, including all 10 CONMEBOL teams and 6 CONCACAF teams.
Chile won the tournament, defeating Argentina in the final via a penalty shootout. This victory was significant as it came just a year after their first Copa América win in 2015, establishing Chile as a dominant force in South American football.
