Pakistan at the Commonwealth Games

Pakistan lies north of the Tropic of Cancer and west of India. The Islamic Republic of Pakistan joined the Commonwealth in 1947 but left the Commonwealth in 1972, before re-entering it again in 1989.

Prior to the partition of India in 1947, the Indian team at the Commonwealth Games may have included athletes from the area which is now Pakistan and Bangladesh.

At the Commonwealth Games, Pakistan made its debut at the 1954 Games (winning 6 medals) and was an ever present up to and including the 1970 Games in Edinburgh (9 medals). Then, after a 20 year absence Pakistan returned to the Games family by competing in Auckland in 1990, and has enjoyed uninterrupted participation ever since.
