As always, it was a great year in sports for Australian athletes and teams.
On the world stage, the Australian women won the World Netball Championships. Highlights for individual athletes: Cyclist Cadel Evans became the first Australian to win the Tour de France, hurdler Sally Pearson won the coveted IAAF World Female Track and Field Athlete of the Year award.
Sally Pearson won gold at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in a championships record time, and was our sole gold medallist.
Samantha Stosur won the US open tennis tournament to become first Aussie woman to win a grand slam event since 1980. NBA player Andrew Bogut was the highest paid Australian athlete for 2011.
The 2011 Don Award, which recognises the sporting achievement of the year which has inspired the people of Australia, was awarded to cyclist Cadel Evans.
