The year 2010 had three major world sporting events, the Winter Olympics, FIFA World Cup,the Commonwealth Games. Athletes from Spain performed well, with Spain winning the World Cup, Alberto Contador winning the Tour de France and Rafael Nadal taking over the mantle of Federer winning three of the grand slam events and achieving a career slam.
Alberto Contador was the initial winner of the 2010 event, but after a prolonged drug investigation he was stripped of his win in 2012, and the prize was given to Andy Schleck of Luxembourg.
In the golf majors, the biggest news was the return of Tiger Woods to the fairways. The Masters was won by Phil Mickelson (3rd time), U.S. Open winner: Graeme McDowell, The Open Championship winner: Louis Oosthuizen and the PGA Championship winner was Martin Kaymer. Despite his indiscretions, Tiger Woods was still the highest earning sportsperson for the year - see the Top Earners for 2010.
The 2010 Laureus World Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards went to sprinter Usain Bolt and tennis player Serena Williams.
