The Royal Navy (RN) is the principal naval warfare service branch of the British Armed Forces. The Royal Navy requires new recruits to undergo fitness assessments as part of the recruitment process. Pre Joining Fitness Tests
Tougher fitness tests for candidates for the Navy, Royal Marines and RAF were introduced in January 2013. The testing includes a 2.4km treadmill run for candidates for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines and additionally press-up and sit-up tests for candidates for the Royal Air Force. Potential candidates are also required to pass a medical exam to show you’re fit and healthy, which includes an eye test,

The Royal Marines Pre-Joining Fitness Test is slightly different - you will have to complete two 2.4km runs (1.5 miles) each with the treadmill set at a 2% incline. To pass you will need to do the first run in under 12 minutes 30 seconds. Then complete the second 2.4km run immediately afterwards in less than 10 minutes – regardless of your age. If you’re applying to the Diver Branch, you have to complete the 2.4km run in 10 minutes 30 secs whatever age you are.
The Royal Navy Fitness Test
On 1 April 1999 the Royal Navy Fitness Test (RNFT) was introduced for all RN and QARNNS personnel. Beginning with personnel under 25 years old, it has progressed annually to include additional 5 year age groups. Within DNPTS, the RNFT Office is responsible for developing, monitoring and implementing RN Fitness Testing policy, procedure, protocols and standards across the RN.
The RNFT is a health-based test, which is both age and gender fair (i.e. the standards have been set to take into account the physiological differences between the genders and the natural decline in stamina levels as one gets older). Testing is conducted and recorded solely by Service PTs. Where logistically possible, individuals are allowed to choose between either of these two tests:
- the 2.4km (1.5 mile) run
- The Multi Stage Fitness Test (MSFT).
Personel over the age of 40 may do the Rockport Walk Sub-maximal test instead of one of the above.
There is also a strength test. A simulated AFFF drum carry of 2x20Kg to be carried 4x15m shuttle, with the weights to be placed down at the end of each shuttle.
