60-Yard Shuttle Test

The 60-Yard Shuttle Test is a test of anaerobic speed endurance, in which participants run to 5 yards, 10 yards, 15 yards, there and back, for a total of 60 yards. This test is part of the fitness testing battery for the NFL Combine and also has been part of US Army fitness testing.

equipment required: stopwatch, measuring tape or marked football field, marker cones, a flat non-slip surface.

pre-test: Explain the test procedures to the subject. Perform screening of health risks and obtain informed consent. Prepare forms and record basic information such as age, height, body weight, gender, test conditions. Measure and mark out the test area. Perform an appropriate warm-up. procedure: This is a ladder shuttle of progressing distances. Four marker cones are placed 5 yards apart. The athlete starts from one end, runs 5 yards and back to the start, 10 yards and back, then 15 yards and finishes at the start line. A total of 60 yards is completed. The player is required to touch the line with their hand at each turn, and runs through the finish line, for a total of five touches. The Army version of this test had the participants picking up a wooden block at the 5 and 10 yard mark and returning it to the start line. The final block at 15 yards is picked up and carried across the finish line.

scoring: The time to complete the test in seconds is recorded. The score is the best time of three trials.

target population: This test is part of the NFL testing combine, though it would be suitable for athletes involved in many team sports such as basketball, hockey, rugby, soccer.

comments: This is a longer version of the other NFL test the 20 yard shuttle agility test.
