9 Minute Walk/Run Test

The nine-minute walk/run test is one of many similar walking and running tests for aerobic fitness. The 9-minute test is one of the tests required for the USA Scouts Personal Fitness Merit Badge. An alternatve to this test is the one-mile run/walk.



test purpose: to test aerobic endurance fitness (the ability of the body to use oxygen as an energy source)

equipment required: flat oval or running track, marking cones, recording sheets, stop watch.

pre-test: Explain the test procedures to the subject. Perform screening of health risks and obtain informed consent. Prepare forms and record basic information such as age, height, body weight, gender, test conditions. Measure and mark out the course using cones. See more details of pre-test procedures.

procedure: Place markers at set intervals around the track to aid in measuring the completed distance. The test requires you to run or walk for 9 minutes, and the total distance covered is recorded. Walking is allowed, though you should try and push yourself as hard as you can.

Running Fitness Test

disadvantages: Practice and pacing are required to achieve the best possible score, and performance on this test can be affected greatly by motivation.

variations / modifications: There are many variations of the walk / run test. For the Personal Fitness Merit Badge, the alternatve to this test is the one mile run/walk.
