Such competitions have been around since the 1920s in California and Hawaii, USA. It became even more popular in the 1930s when a silent film was created called "On The Waves in Waikiki" where a man and his terrier were surfing together in a wooden surfboard in Hawaii. The terrier performed the hang-ten surfing maneuver on the surfboard.

Judges of dog surfing competitions judge the dog’s overall certainty on the board, size of the wave and the time duration of them up on their boards.
