Four years after awarding hosting rights for the 2022 World Cup to Qatar, FIFA took the unprecedented step of shifting the tournament from the summer to the Northern Hemisphere winter to avoid the very high daytime temperatures in Qatar. The final is now to be played on December 18, 2022. The World Cup will also be a shorter-than-usual 28 days, putting the expected start on November 21.
We polled visitors to this site a little after the decision was made (early 2015), asking them if they thought it was a good decision. After over 1000 votes, the poll was closed. The most popular response was that it was a bad decision.
A good follow up poll would have been to determine why people though it was a bad decision? Was it because of the change in weather, the disruption to other competitions, or that it should not have been changed once the dates had been set. There was also a significant number of people who did not care - not football fans or maybe just fans who are happy to watch the World Cup whenever it is played.
