The UEFA European Championship was formerly known as the UEFA European Nations Cup but changed to the current name in 1969.
The Henri Delaunay Trophy is awarded to the winning team, in honor of the first General Secretary of UEFA who came up with the idea for the European Championship but died five years after the first tournament.
The 1960 tournament had four teams competing in the finals (17 nations had entered the competition - though major teams England, the Netherlands, West Germany and Italy did not enter)
In the 1968 tournament, it was the first time that a winner was decided via a coin toss, though not for the final, which required a match replay to determine the winner.
From 1960 until 1976, only four teams competed in the tournament.

The final of the 1976 tournament was decided by a penalty shootout, the first ever in a major international tournament.
The record for the most goals at a single tournament is nine by Frenchman Michel Platini in 1984, which he achieved in five games.
The 1992 tournament was the first major tournament to have the players' names printed on their backs.
The Euros championship is known to be the second most watched international football tournament just after the FIFA World Cup.
In 1996, Germany won the Final 2–1 against Czechia thanks to the first golden goal ever in a major tournament.
UEFA Euro 2000 was the first tournament to be hosted by two countries - the Netherlands and Belgium.
UEFA experimented with a third-place match from 1960 to 1980, but it since 1984 there hasn't been a third-place match at the Euros.
In 2004, Latvia became the first (and so far only) Baltic team to qualify for a European Championship.
Spain currently holds the record for winning two consecutive titles in 2008 and 2012.
The Euro 2020 tournament was postponed until 2021 due to the corona virus pandemic.
Euro 2021 was held in eleven cities in eleven different European countries.
In 2021 the video assistant referee (VAR) system was used for the first time.
Spain's win in 2024 made them the most successful team, with three European Championships.
