The 1972 UEFA European Championship, held in Belgium from June 14 to June 18, was the fourth edition of the tournament. The tournament featured only four teams—West Germany, the Soviet Union, Belgium, and Hungary—competing in the finals.
West Germany emerged as the dominant force, winning their first European Championship title by defeating the Soviet Union 3-0 in a one-sided final at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels.
The goals for West Germany came from Gerd Müller, who scored twice (in the 27th and 58th minutes), and Herbert Wimmer, who added the third in the 52nd minute.
In the semi-finals, West Germany defeated the host nation, Belgium, with a 2-1 victory, thanks to goals from Gerd Müller. The Soviet Union reached the final by overcoming Hungary with a narrow 1-0 win, courtesy of a goal by Anatoliy Konkov.
West Germany's Gerd Müller was the standout performer of the tournament, finishing as the top scorer with four goals.
