The tournament saw the participation of six CONMEBOL nations—Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay.
The event was conducted in a round-robin format where each team played against the others once, and Argentina emerged as the winner by finishing first in the standings, securing their fourth Copa América title.

- At the time the tournament was named the South American Championship. It was not called the Copa América until after 1967.
