Gymnastics was first held at the Commonwealth Games as a demonstration sport in 1974, before being included in the main programme in 1978. After a break it reappeared in 1990 and gymnastics has appeared at every games since.
Competition
The Artistic Gymnastics program features men and women performing feats of fitness, skill, concentration, flexibility and artistic flair.
Women contest the following events:
- Vault
- Uneven Bars
- Balance Beam
- Floor
Men contest the following events:
- The Vault
- Parallel Bars
- Horizontal Bar
- Floor
- Still Rings
- Pommel Horse.
- Athletes compete in a team event which counts as both a medal event and the qualification round for the Individual All-Around and Individual Apparatus events.
Trivia
- An outstanding performance by an Australian was by Andrei Kravtsov in Men’s Artistic Gymnastics at the 1998 Games - winning four Gold (Men’s Individual All Around; Floor; Pommel; Parallel Bars) and 1 Silver (Men’s Artistic Team).
