The Principality of Monaco is a city-state located in the French Riviera in the Western region of Europe. This microstate is well known for a lot of things, one of which is as a Mecca for the rich and famous but one thing cannot be denied. Monaco is also a haven for various kinds of sports.
Monaco is well known for the Monaco Grand Prix which is held in the streets of Monaco every year since it started in 1929. This is one, if not the, most prestigious races in the world as well as one of the most challenging because of its very narrow and tight turns. It is regarded as the most challenging tracks in Formula One. Motorsport is the most popular sport in Monaco.
Other the Monaco Grand Prix, the country is also home to one of the toughest and most challenging rally in the world, the Monte Carlo Rally, originally held for Prince Albert I. It was the opening rally for the World Rally Championship (WRC, 1973 – 2008) and the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (2009 – 2011). In 2012, the Monte Carlo Rally was once again part of the WRC.
Monaco is also a beacon for many spectator sports like football, rugby, tennis, chess and cycling. Because of the appeal of living in Monaco for various reasons such as not having to pay an income tax, many international sport stars have come to stay in Monaco for extended periods like Fabien Barthez, Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet, all French World Cup winners. Monaco is also the venue for various sports like the Monte Carlo Open (golf), the Monaco Marathon which is the only marathon in the world that passes through three separate countries and the 2009 Tour de France where Monaco was the starting point.
There is a national football team, however Monaco is not a member of FIFA or UEFA, and therefore cannot enter the FIFA World Cup or the UEFA European Championship. The team's best international result was a 2–0 win over the Vatican City in 2013.
