The National Physical Fitness Award Scheme (NAPFA), launched in 1982, is a series of tests of physical fitness for the children of Singapore. It forms part of Singapore's Sports For Life program. All schools are required to participate in the tests, which will done every two years from 2014 onwards. From 2014 only those in Primary 4 and 6, Secondary 2 and 4 or 5, and Junior College Year 2 will take the test.
The Fitness Tests
NAPFA involves a series of five testing stations which are attempted on the same day, with a 2–5 minute rest period permitted between each. The Walk-Run may be attempted on a different day.
- Sit-ups: Maximum number achieved in one minute.
- Standing Broad Jump: Best of two attempts.
- Sit and Reach: Best result of two attempts, with floating zero point.
- Pull-ups: Maximum achieved in half-a-minute. Full pull ups are performed by males aged over 15. Females and males aged 15 and under perform a modified inclined pull up test.
- Shuttle Run: Fastest score from two 4×10 meter attempts.
- Walk-Run Test: run on firm and level surface over a distance of 2.4 km (1.5 mile) for secondary school students or a 1.6 km (1 mile) for primary school students. Minimum time recorded.
Results
The performances are compared to a chart and allocated a grade from A (excellent) to F for each test. The awards are:
- Gold Award: at least a C grade performance in all 6 test items and a total of 21 or more points.
- Silver Award: at least a D grade performance in all 6 test items and a total of 15 or more points
- Bronze Award: at least an E grade performance in all 6 test items and a total of 6 or more points
