The stadium reopened in 2003 after a $1000 million reconstruction project. The capacity of the ground is 39,297 and the population of the city 520,000.

The stadium is the home ground of the Bundesliga club Hannover 96. This stadium was one of the 12 stadiums of the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
