Men's water polo was held at the inaugural World Swimming Championships in Belgrade. Women’s water polo was included in the FINA World Championships for the first time in Madrid 1986, with Australia winning the gold medal.
About Water Polo
- Water Polo is an extremely fierce, competitive and tiring game. It is played over four, eight minute periods.
- Seven players from each team are in the pool at any one time, though each team is made up of 13 players and regular substitutions are common.
