Host City: Albertville 1992
The Winter Olympic Games were held in Alberville, France, in 1992, between Feb 8-23. There was a total of 64 Nations represented, with 1801 participants competing in 57 events. Actually only 18 of the 57 events were held in Albertville - the sports were shared out among seven other Savoy resorts to satisfy local politicians and businessmen.
Trivia
- At these games Germany sent a single team after East and West German reunification in 1990 and the USSR competed as the Unified Team after the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.
- Vegard Ulvang and Bjorn Daehlie of Norway dominated the Nordic skiing men's cross-country races with three gold medals each.
- Women's cross-country skier Raisa Smetanina of the Soviet Union won her 10th medal just before her 40th birthday to become the most successful, and oldest, Winter Olympic competitor, having participated in five Winter Games.
Directions from Albertville to other Olympic host cities - Toni Nieminen of Finland won the large hill (K120) ski jump (and the team event) to become the youngest Winter Olympic champion at 16 years. In Albertville in 1992.
- Nicolas Bochatay, a 27-year-old Swiss skier, died after colliding with a snow grooming vehicle while warming up before the finals of the speed-skiing competition. (more on Winter Games Deaths)
