Croatia at the Winter Olympic Games
Once part of Yugoslavia, Croatia made its first appearance at the Winter Olympic Games as a sovereign nation in 1992 and has participated at all Winter Olympics since then. Croatia was part of the Yugoslavian Olympic team from 1920 to 1988.
The young nation experienced a medal shutout in the Winter Olympic Games from 1992 to 1998, but made a big splash in the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games when it took home four medals (3 gold and 1 silver) to salvage a decent 12th place finish on the medal table.
Janica Kostelić is the most successful Croatian athlete, winning 6 medals (four gold and 2 silver) in alpine skiing from 2002 to 2006, on the other end, her brother Ivica Kostelić brought home 4 silver medals from 2006 to 2014 also in alpine skiing. Biathlete Jakov Fak captured a bronze medal in 2010.
Trivia
- At Salt Lake City in 2002, the Croat Janica Kostelic won three golds in the alpine skiing, a triple feat only achieved previously by the greats Toni Sailer and Jean-Claude Killy.
