Sydney Torch Relay
The Sydney 2000 Torch Relay was started on 10th May 2000 in Olympia. From there the torch made its way to Sydney, passing through 13 Olympic nations in Oceania on the way.
In Australia, the torch passed through all states and territories. Each torch bearer carried the torch for 1 km. The torch was also was carried by other forms of transport, including tram, stock horse, dragon boat, solar car and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
After 100 days, the final leg was by Australian Aboriginal Cathy Freeman, who lit the cauldron to start of the Games, on 15 September 2000.
Cathy Freeman went on to win the 400m race. She is the only person to light the Olympic Flame and win a gold medal at the same Games.
