The 1928 Olympic Games were held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from 28 July to 12 August 1928. 46 nations and 2,883 athletes (2,606 men, 277 women) participated in 109 events in 14 sports. Germany returned to the Games after a sixteen hiatus. The United States won the most gold and overall medals (see 1928 medal tally).

- These Olympic Games were the first where the Olympic Flame was introduced. Also, at the Opening Ceremony the team from Greece led the Parade of Nations and the host Dutch team marched in last, the first time the tradition of Greece first, hosts last was part of the ceremony
- The Amsterdam Olympic Games was the first to featured a 400 meters track, a distance that would become standard for tracks in the future.
- In a rowing quarter-final at the 1928 Amsterdam games, Australia's Henry Pearce stopped rowing to allow a family of ducks to pass safely in front of his boat. He still won the heat and took gold in the final.
- Luigina Giavotti became the youngest medalist of all time, helping the Italian gymnastics team pick up a silver at 11 years and 302 days old.
- In 1928, the champion Finnish distance runner Paavo Nurmi won three more medals, including one gold.
