1916 canceled Olympic Games
The 1916 Summer Olympic Games were scheduled to be held in Berlin, Germany, but were eventually canceled due to the outbreak of World War I in 1914. The bid process was held in in Stockholm on July 1912. Candidate cities were Alexandria, Amsterdam, Brussels, Budapest, Cleveland and Berlin, with Berlin being selected.
Trivia
- Part of the canceled program was set to include a winter sports week, with speed skating, figure skating, ice hockey and Nordic skiing. This concept eventually gave rise to the Winter Olympic Games.
- Berlin would eventually host the 1936 Summer Olympics.
