Cayman Islands at the Olympics
As part of the West Indies Federation, Cayman Islands were represented at the 1960 Olympic Games, though no athletes from Cayman Islands were in the team.
When Jamaica won its independence in 1962, the Cayman Islands automatically became a separate territorial entity from Jamaica and are still considered a British Overseas Territory. In 1973, the Cayman Islands established their National Olympic Committee and were recognized by the international committee in 1976, just in time for them to participate in the 1976 Summer Games which was held in Montreal, Canada.
Sailors Peter Milburn and Gerry Kirkconnell represented the Cayman Islands in Montreal. The Cayman Islands missed the next Summer Games, which was held in Moscow, USSR because they chose to participate in the American-led boycott of the Summer Games that year. But they did send athletes to Los Angeles, California, USA in 1984. From that point on, the Cayman Islands has never missed a single Summer Games.
With their almost perfect attendance since their debut to the Summer Games, the Cayman Islands are yet to snatch their first Olympic medal.
In 2010, they also started competing in the Winter Games. Alpine skier Dow Travers competed in the men's giant slalom for both 2010 (Vancouver, Canada) and 2014 (Sochi, Russia) Winter Olympics making him Cayman Islands' only Winter Olympian. He is yet to win a single Olympic medal either.
