Bangladesh at the Olympics

Bangladesh established the Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) in 1979 and is also the governing body for the country’s representation for other major international sporting events like the Commonwealth Games.

Bangladesh had never competed as an independent nation at the Olympics until the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles, California, USA.

Prior to 1980 Bangldesh athletes may still have participated. Bangladesh competed as part of British India prior to 1947 and as part of Pakistan prior to 1972.

Technically, Bangladeshi athletes have never “qualified” for the Summer Games but have been able to participate through the wildcard process in place for the Summer Games.

Bangladesh has a population of upwards of 150 million but they are yet to produce a single Olympic medalist. Their poor performance in the Summer Games since their debut in 1984 has been associated with the fact that they do not have a lot of resources for the training of their athletes.

Bangladesh has also never competed in the Winter Games.
