Frank Kugler’s great exploits in the Olympic Game is not about winning the most number of medals or setting any new record in any sport discipline. He gained popularity in the Olympiad by virtue of being a versatile athlete, winning four medals in the Olympics in weightlifting, freestyle wrestling, and tug of war at the 1904 edition of the Games in St Louis. This feat makes him the only participant to have won medals in three different sports in an Olympic Games.
Kugler was a strength athlete. He took the silver medal in wrestling’s heavyweight category and three bronze medals in the weightlifting’s two-hand lift, the all-around dumbbell, and the tug of war competition.
The German-American Kugler was acknowledged as an American by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) even though he was a German citizen during the Games.
