1984 New York and Stoke Mandeville Paralympic Games
The seventh Paralympics were held in New York and Stoke Mandeville in 1984. The event was known as The 1984 International Games for the Disabled, now referred to as the 1984 Summer Paralympics.
There were two separate competitions: one in Stoke Mandeville, UK for wheelchair athletes with spinal cord injuries and the other in New York, USA for wheelchair and other athletes including cerebral palsy, amputee and visually impaired athletes.
Trivia
- There was a scandal involving the basketball team for intellectual disabilities from Spain at the 1984 Paralympics, in which many of their players were found not to have a disability. This forced this category to be dropped until 2012, and only returning with stricter rules for inclusion.
- As with the 1984 Summer Olympics, the Soviet Union and many other communist countries boycotted the Paralympic Games.
- The 1984 Paralympic Games were the last Summer Paralympic Games not to be staged by the same host city as the Olympic Games.
- The mascot for the 1984 Paralympic Games was Dan D. Lion
