The first-ever 1960 Paralympics were held in Rome, Italy, with 23 countries and 400 athletes participating. At the time, it was the 9th International Stoke Mandeville Games, which are now recognized as the first Summer Paralympics.
These Games were only open to wheelchair athletes, competing in eight sports - archery, athletics, dartchery, snooker, swimming, table tennis, wheelchair fencing and wheelchair basketball.
