- Chamonix, France hosted the first Winter University Games in 1960, there were 13 medal events.
- The first University Games staged in a non-European country was the 3rd Summer Universiade in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
- The 8th Summer Universiade in Rome was held as part of the World University Athletics Championship.
- For the 2015 event, Slovakia became the co-host with Granada in Spain and hosted the Nordic Skiing and Biathlon events when the Granada 2015 Organising Committee had difficulty hosting these particular events.
- The Summer World University Games due to be held in Chengdu, China in 2021 was been postponed until 2022 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
- As part of a new branding system by the FISU in 2020, Universiade was officially rebranded as the FISU World University Games.
