Taekwondo is a marital art that was developed in Korea. It was a demonstration sport at the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games before becoming an official sport in Sydney 2000.
In 1988, there was a mass demonstration of taekwondo at the opening ceremony, with with hundreds of adults and children performing moves in unison. A competition was also held. A single-elimination tournament was held in eight different weight classes. A total of 120 men and 63 women from 35 different nations competed, with fighters from the host nation of South Korea winning nine of the sixteen events.
In 1992, a total of 64 men and 64 women competed in eight different weight classes.
When Taekwondo became an official sport in 2000, the competition was only for four weight classes.
