- The first tournament was in 2008. The highest bid of US$1.5 million was for the Indian one-day captain MS Dhoni and not far behind was Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds.
- Lakshmipathy Balaji took the first hat-trick in the inaugural competition. Amit Mishra and Makhaya Ntini also picked up a hat-trick in the same season.
- In 2009, Manish Pandey became the first Indian player to score a century in the IPL.
- In 2010, the IPL became the first sporting event in the world to be broadcast live on YouTube. Also in 2010, the final four matches of the tournament were screened in 3D across movie halls in India.
- Most seasons there have been 8 teams in the competition. There were ten in 2011, nine in 2012 and 2013, and 10 teams since 2022.
- In one of the games in 2013, Kolkata Knight Riders player Yusuf Pathan became the first player in Twenty20 cricket to be dismissed for obstructing the field.
- A part of the 2014 tournament was held outside India as a security measure as the tournament took place at the same time as the 2014 Indian general election. The tournament was jointly hosted by India and the United Arab Emirates.
- The 2014 the auction was held in Indian Rupees, as opposed to US dollars as had been done previously.
- The 2016 season was the first IPL season to use LED stumps.
- The first time DRS was used in the IPL was in 2018.
- Australian player Ashton Turner, playing for the Rajasthan Royals, became the first batsman to make five consecutive ducks in Twenty20 cricket, in 2019.
- The 2020 tournament was originally postponed because of lockdowns in India due to the coronavirus pandemic, then played later in the year in the United Arab Emirates. The following tournament in 2021 was suspended due to the pandemic, then the remaining matches played in the UAE.
